Miniature Absolute Encoders for Grey Zone Pharma Machinery: Integrating 20mm POSITAL IXARC Behind Cleanroom Bulkheads
For pharmaceutical machinery builders and OEMs, keeping active mechanical and electronic components inside the grey zone technical bay, ensuring they never compromise the white zone cleanroom, is critical to preventing batch contamination.
In these architectures, drive components are generally isolated behind an IP67 to IP69K stainless steel bulkhead, with low-friction dynamic seals to block dust, CIP washdowns, and particulates. The space behind the bulkhead is very limited, so you're looking at high-performance components that are extremely well miniaturised without any sacrifice in accuracy or ruggedness.
At PCA, we supply POSITAL's range of miniature rotary encoders, including the ultra-compact IXARC 20mm miniature multi-turn magnetic encoder.

POSITAL 20mm IXARC Form Factor
20mm outer diameter x 31mm overall length for tight installation behind stainless steel machine panels. Available in both solid and hollow shaft versions and are ideal for use in compact rotary joints, pick-and-place arms and filling line drives. Key features include:
- High Resolution: up to 19-bit single-turn resolution with multi-turn tracking.
- Flexible form factor: radial or axial cable egress options to suit tight conduit and cable routing.
- Communication: native support for high-speed BiSS-C and SSI industrial interfaces to deliver low-latency feedback to the majority of motion controllers and servo drives.

Wiegand Battery-Free Multi-Turn Revolution Counting
Accessing a cramped grey zone cabinet to change a backup battery will cause unnecessary cleanroom downtime and maintenance overhead. The POSITAL IXARC multi-turn encoders solve that problem.
Uses an integrated Wiegand wire sensor to harvest the magnetic energy from the rotation of the shaft. Each revolution produces a voltage pulse which is sufficient to register and store the revolution count in non-volatile memory (so it's all there even when the power's off). The end result is a completely maintenance-free absolute encoder with no gears and no batteries.
